Africa Dialogues 2019 is set to take place on the afternoon of October 26 at the Zhongguancun Chuangye Tower, in Haidian District, Beijing. This second edition, organized by Beijing-based social enterprise Duapa Africa in conjunction with Haidian Pioneer Park and other partners, is placed under the theme “This is Africa: A Thriving Hub of Global Talents and Innovation.” Africa dialogues was first held in 2018 and attracted over 150 foreign and local audiences.
Musa Frimpong, the Founder and CEO of Duapa Africa, highlights the saying, which suggests that “Until lions get their historians, the tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter” as the inspiration behind Africa dialogues. The event’s main focus is to tell the true Africa story by Africans. It aims at countering and dispelling existing misunderstandings and stereotypes about the continent, in addition to creating awareness in Beijing for both locals and foreigners. The event also seeks to serve as a platform to bridge the existing cultural gap and enhance people-to-people interactions between the African and Chinese communities, as well as the African and other foreign communities in China. In this sense, the theme of this year’s edition will prove to be a good framework to go beyond both the biased and stereotyped representations of the continent often presented by some, and the unrealistic and sometime idealistic portrayals of others.
The highlight of Africa Dialogues 2019 is a series of talks by five inspiring and talented speakers from different backgrounds, who, through sharing their stories and thoughts, will provide insightful perspectives to discussions related to the theme of the event. Those distinguished speakers are H.E. Mr. Edward Boateng, Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to the People’s Republic of China; Ms. Tina Tendai Makuku, Founder and CEO of Chariots Handmade; Mr. Edwin Mwenda, Founder and CEO of AHAVAH Group; Ms. Opeyemi Awe, Schwarzman Scholar at Tsinghua University; and Mr. Jesus P.G. Imendji, Founder and CEO of Shanghai International Services Agency. Other activities include keynote speeches, an exhibition showcasing the uniqueness of Africa, some engaging performances, as well as a Q&A session with all the speakers, which will allow members of the audience to join the conversation, through questions and comments.
